Today's word is ignorance. Being ignorant is not, as most people believe, the same as being stupid. Ignorance is just a lack of knowledge, whereas if you don't know what stupid is, I can't help you. I'm not talking about stupid yet. Most people who know me think I'm pretty smart, but there are a lot of things I am ignorant about.
If there were ever a social ill with an easy fix it's ignorance. If you've ever seen an apostrophe used to indicate a plural, someone using a word in the wrong context (to many instead of too many,) that's ignorance. For the record, simple spelling and grammar mistakes will make me abandon a website when I shop on the web. If they are that careless about the presentation of their website, I just assume their customer service skills are just as bad. Am I wrong to make assumptions about people I don't know? Probably, but if they slept through that many English classes, I certainly don't feel they deserve my business.
What's the easy fix? Read. That's right, read something every day no matter what it is. One of my best friends was on his honeymoon years ago and they stopped to eat. His wife was reading a book when the waitress came over to take their order and asked, "Whatcha readin for?" Get used to being poor, Honey.
How many times have you heard "Knowledge is power?" Knowledge does not fall from the sky and take up space in your brain. Knowledge must be acquired. Pay attention to the world around you. There are so many interesting things out there. Learn something every day, it doesn't even have to be useful knowledge. If there's nothing that interests you, I don't know what to tell you except you may as well cash in your cosmic chips, because you're just taking up space.
